100% Destemmed. Minimal sulfur added at the crusher. Spontaneous fermentation started after 3 days, fermented at relatively cool temperature to preserve aromatics, manually punched down twice daily. Pressed off at dryness, aged 20 months in neutral barrels and puncheons. 108 cases produced. 12.9% ABV.

This vineyard is located in the Sonoma County portion of the Carneros AVA. The mild temperatures of the area (which is often associated with cooler climate varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) allow this Merlot to retain great acidity, while expressing itself more on the herbal and spice end of the spectrum rather than the ripe, fruity side. The vineyard itself, planted in the late 1980's, is managed by our friends at Les Lunes Wine, who take a very holistic approach to their vineyard management. Eschewing herbicides and most pesticides, their practices are guided by the principle of minimizing external inputs to the vineyard by carefully managing the vines needs by hand.
